Chiropractic care offers a variety of benefits to those dealing with musculoskeletal injuries.

Experiencing a car accident can be scary and nerve-wracking, and in the moment you may be so focused on making sure everyone is chiropractic careokay, talking to the other involved party and exchanging insurance information that you may not even notice that your body was injured. Luckily, our Austin, TX, chiropractor Dr. Zeke has experience working with those patients dealing with car accident injuries.

What are some of the most common car accident injuries?

After a car accident, it is common for people to experience musculoskeletal injuries that impact how certain ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves or discs function. Common problems include:

  • Whiplash (neck injury)
  • Back pain
  • Ligament sprains
  • Tendonitis
  • Herniated or bulging discs

If you are experiencing inflammation, pain, discomfort, swelling, redness or discomfort when performing certain activities then it’s a good idea to turn to a medical professional for treatment. The sooner you seek treatment the better, as problems can often linger and lead to chronic pain and inflammation.

How can chiropractic care help me?

Luckily, if you are dealing with pain, discomfort or other issues as a result of an auto accident then our Austin, TX, chiropractic specialist can help you. We specialize in treating and managing symptoms for a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries and problems. Many people who’ve been in a car accident deal with whiplash, a common neck injury that can cause stiffness, pain, limited range of motion and headaches.

Whiplash, as well as other musculoskeletal injuries, can be treated through a variety of chiropractic techniques including spinal manipulation. The school of thought when it comes to chiropractic care is to provide non-surgical, drug-free ways to improve how the body functions and works and to facilitate faster healing.

Chiropractic care can alleviate pain, reduce swelling, improve range of motion and flexibility and speed up the healing process. One of the most common chiropractic treatments is spinal manipulation, in which we apply certain controlled force to areas around the spine to realign spinal discs back into their proper positions, which will help take pressure off certain ligaments, tendons and nerves to get blood flowing to these areas. By improving blood flow we can also boost the body’s natural healing process.

Bee Caves Scoliosis Center in Austin, TX, prides itself on offering a multitude of chiropractic options to boost healing while also improving physical function, well-being and quality of life. If you are dealing with injuries from a car accident give us a call today.

The unexpected happens. Motor vehicle accidents cause a wide variety of injuries, but one of the most common is whiplash. The suddenback pain impact of your car accident in Austin, TX, forced your head backwards quickly and then forward, affecting the vertebrae, muscles, nerves, connective tissue and discs in your cervical spine. How can you take care of your back? Dr. Zeke Harkleroad of Bee Caves Scoliosis Center urges victims of MVAs to see him immediately for evaluation and treatment.

Before seeing your chiropractor

Many times, symptoms of back problems go unnoticed for days, but then, the pain and dysfunction begins. The Spinal Research Institute of San Diego says that common whiplash happens to about three million Americans annually, and most of those injuries originate in car accidents.

What can you do with your injury? Even before seeing Dr. Zeke, there are steps you can take to take care of your back:

  1. Ice the neck or other areas of the back to reduce swelling. This is critical especially within the first 72 hours after your mishap.
  2. Rest. Do not keep doing your normal routine, but take a step back to ease tightened muscles.
  3. Move more slowly and gently, but do move. Complete immobilization only increases symptoms of pain and stiffness.
  4. Make an appointment at Bee Caves Scoliosis Center as soon as possible.

When you see Dr. Zeke

Be sure to tell him the full details of your Austin, TX, car accident, including any symptoms of pain, dizziness, limited mobility, headache, and muscle strain you may have. Then, Dr. Zeke will fully evaluate your spine, including your range of motion and areas of tenderness. He likely will order X-rays and other imaging to pinpoint the exact areas affected by your car accident. Then, he'll formulate a treatment plan geared to your specific needs.

This care plan may include:

  • Chiropractic adjustments to relieve subluxations in the spine (misalignments, pinched nerves and strained muscles)
  • Massage therapy to increase the effectiveness and longevity of these adjustments
  • Ultrasound to increase healing and reduce pain
  • Stretching exercises and physical therapy

Find out what can cause a herniated disk and how getting chiropractic care in Austin can help.

A spinal disk is made up of a hard outer surface with a softer region in the center. If the disk is herniated (sometimes referred to as a herniated disk“slipped disk”) this means that the soft center is protruding out of a crack in the exterior. A herniated disk may not always cause problems, but it can cause numbness, weakness or even pain. Our Austin, TX chiropractor, Dr. Zeke Harkleroad, is here to talk about what causes herniated disks and how chiropractic treatment could help.

Why am I experiencing a herniated disk?

The most common cause of this spinal condition is wear and tear that happens over time, due to age. This is known as disk degeneration and this problem happens gradually as we get older. Why? Spinal disks contain water, which it starts to lose as we age. As water lessens the disks become less mobile and are more susceptible to tears and ruptures when an injury occurs.

While you may not be able to determine the root cause of your herniated disk, postural habits, traumatic falls, accidents or even lifting heavy object incorrectly are enough to cause disk herniation.

What are the symptoms?

As we mentioned above, not everyone will experience symptoms. Sometimes the only way to determine that you have a herniated disk is through imaging tests. However, sometimes those with herniated disks do experience pain. Here are some of the most common symptoms:

  • Arm or leg pain
  • Tingling or numbness in a certain body part
  • Muscles weakness

If you notice that neck or back pain radiates to your arms or legs and you’re also experiencing weakness, numbness or tingling it’s important that you seek out medical attention.

How can a chiropractor help?

Fortunately, we can help treat your back pain and other symptoms related to your herniated disc. Before we start treatment, we will need to get some information about your medical history and also perform a thorough physical exam.

We will check to make sure that your reflexes are responding properly, that you are losing muscles strength and that there is no loss of sensation along the nerve pathways. We will examine your entire spine, even if you are only noticing pain or issues with your lower back. We want to know how well your entire spine is functioning since a problem in one area can cause issues in other areas. If you are a good candidate for chiropractic care, your treatment plan may include spinal manipulation (also referred to as spinal adjustments), manual therapy and therapeutic exercises. Your treatment plan will be tailored to you based on your health, physical activity level and the severity of your symptoms.

Here at Bee Caves Scoliosis Center in Austin, TX, our goal is to reduce your pain and other symptoms to make it easier to get around. Improve your quality of life by getting the chiropractic care your body not only deserves but also needs to be healthier.

Find out why a herniated disc shouldn’t be ignored.

If you were to look at the human spine, you would see that it’s made up of a series of vertebrae with discs in between that help to support herniated discand cushion the back. However, if an injury or spinal disease causes the disks to weaken the center of it will pop out and cause nerve compression and pain. A herniated disc is definitely something that requires care, and luckily your Austin, TX chiropractor, Dr. Zeke, is here to help.

Herniated Disc Signs and Symptoms

If you have a herniated disc, here are some of the common symptoms people experience:

  • Pain in the affected area that may even be described as electric in nature. If the compression is in the cervical region (the neck) the shock/pain may radiate down the arms.
  • Besides electric shock-like pain, you may also experience numbness or tingling in that same area.
  • You may also notice muscle weakness due to the herniated disk. Your Austin chiropractic expert will be able to test your reflexes to see if you are dealing with muscle weakness.

Herniated Disc Treatments

Non-surgical options are usually the best course of action against your herniated disc symptoms. Pain medications can be taken to help alleviate the pain, but this is only considered temporarily relief from your symptoms. We can show you some stretching and strengthening exercises that can be performed in the comfort of your home to retrain certain muscles.

If patients are overweight, we will also discuss lifestyle changes to help maintain a healthier weight to improve spinal health. Physical therapy can also help those with disk problems. Ice or heat therapy can be a great way to reduce pain as well.

As if this wasn’t enough, chiropractic manipulation also readjusts your spine to alleviate pain and pressure on certain nerves and disks. Also referred to as spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustment, this technique manipulates certain vertebrae to improve the overall function of the spine.
